Overview of the Domestic Adoption Process

 

THE  ADOPTION PROCESS a Brief Overview

Who can adopt?

 Residents of the State of Arizona.

 Single or married persons, married couples may adopt together.

 Must be approved to adopt by the Court.

 

How to get Started?        

1. Select an adoption agency.

2. Complete the Home Study to submit to the court.

3. Get your finger prints for the background check.

4. Select an attorney.

3. Get  certified by the court.

Getting to the Final Adoption Hearing:

You will need an attorney to finalize your adoption. The attorney will help you throughout the adoption process from temporary custody of the child, parental consents or termination of the parents rights and finally, with filing your adoption petition. The attorney will also help you determine if your family is eligible for an expedited final adoption hearing.The Adoption Petition and Other Pleadings- are how you ask the court to grant your adoption. At a minimum the attorney will file:

  • Adoption Petition
  • Attorney Accounting of Expenses
  • Verifications
  • Eligibility for Expedited hearing
  • Notice of Hearing
  • Affidavit of Compliance

The Final Adoption Hearing!!! 

In court, the Judge grants your adoption. The adoptive parents will give testimony but don’t be nervous. These hearings are very informal. Bring your camera, you family and friends.

After the Adoption finalization there is a little more work, you will need to:

  • Obtain a new Birth Certificate
  • Social Security card
  • Update school and medical records
