Adoption Certification

In Arizona, you must be certified by the court to adopt children unless you fall into one of the categorical exceptions such as step-parents or grandparents.

The Certification Process: A.R.S. §8-105

  1. An adoption agency conducts an investigation into the prospective adoptive parents.
  2. The report includes recommendations on whether the court should certify the family.
  3. The agency submits the report to the Court.
  4. The court has 60 days to decide upon the application.
  5. The court certifies the family as acceptable, or not acceptable, to adopt.
  6. The certification is valid for eighteen months and may be extended for another year.

Finding an Adoption Agency

Arizona has numerous excellent adoption agencies. When choosing an agency, it is very important the agency be a good fit for your family. They will be your source of support and guidance as you go through the adoption process. You may be with this agency for a while, so take your time and pick the one that’s right for you.

Evaluate the types of programs and services the agency has and compare them to your needs.

Some questions to consider include:

  • Do they offer the kind of programs you are looking for?
  • Do they offer foster care licensure if you choose that option?
  • Do they have support groups?
  • How often and what level of contact will you have with your worker?
  • How long does the home study process take?
  • What are the fees?
  • Do they have any post-adoption services?

The adoption agency recommends the family for certification but they can decline to recommend a family. The report is submitted to court for certification and the family must receive final approval by the court.
