Handy Dandy Resources: My Social Security

My Social SecurityMy social security account

I love the Social Security Administration website. (And yes, I can here you groan) But they must have the best web designers. The site is easy to use and full of information. And now you can manage your own account and check in on your benefits. We are all worried that Social Security won't be there when we are ready, that it will be bankrupt but thus far that doesn't appear to be happening. Reality is that Social Security remains the primary income source for most Americans in retirement.

So be informed about it. Get the most out of it. Make sure you have good information about it. On your account you can:

  1. Keep track of your earnings and verify them every year;
  2. Get an estimate of your future benefits if you are still working;
  3. Get a letter with proof of your benefits if you currently receive them.

Manage your benefits:

  • Change your address;
  • Start or change your direct deposit;
  • Get a replacement Medicare card; and
  • Get a replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S for tax season.

You can also call SSA toll-free at 1-800-772-1213 or TTY number, 1-800-325-0778. They provide general information by automated phone service 24 hours a day. Case-specific questions are answered from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday OR you can make an appointment to speak to a representative.
